ok, So I wanted to build this BIG eSATA set-up.
8x300 gig drives in each enclosure.

This is on a MAC (yes a MACINTOSH), Ok, I am using Sonnets eSATA x 8 port external PCI cards (2 of these).
And the cases I am using are from Cooldrives.com http://www.cooldrives.com/eidrrerasaii.html

I had them replace the Multilane connectors with 8 eSATA connectors to match the PCI cards I am getting.

Well, so far, I can get the drives to work/mount etc...
but, when I leave the comp alone for a while, or try to start something serious up my comp goes into a serious kernel panic, and only a Hard power down will get rid of it.
Once restarted, it's back to square 1.
any suggestions?

thanks!

Are you attempting to mirror Google? That's a serious amount of storage for a 2005 vintage Mac!

How much memory do you have in the Mac?

Do you have the latest drivers from the vendor's website? Apple, cooldrives, the hard drives (firmware), and Sonnet?

Have you checked your drive power consumption figures against the amount of current the power supply can source? If it is getting close to the upper limit (allow a generous margin for spin up current when it is chewing the most power), then you might want to consider removing some of the drives from the case or increasing your power supply specifications.

Check the cabes are adequately earthed, both the data cables going to the Mac and the power supply cables have a common earth.

Are your power saving/hibernation settings correct?

Is there an option to delay spin up for each drive to a random value to stagger the power consumption when the drives are woken up after a period of idle?

Anything relevant in the syslog?

Just some ideas...

Running this on a Dual 2.0 G5.
4 gigs ram
OSX .4.3
I have tried this with only 1 drive hooked up.
Same problem....
Called Sonnet they thought I had a defective card from them.
Replaced it, SAME PROBLEM>
