Lets face it. Most that use programs such as bearshare, limewire, and others like it do so for one reason. They just want to download without haveing to upload. They have no desire to to "share" as it were. I am not saying everyone does this but I would be willing to bet alot do.

For thoes that have not made the switch I really suggest bittorrent. Myself I have tried them all and the "utorrent" program works by far the best. Its the fastest on my set up. It is forsure a user friendly program and so super easy to set up and run. Even has a quick check to make sure you can connect and use bittorrent. The utorrent forum is really great as well.

I really believe bearshare and other programs while in there time were great, thoes programs are becomeing obsolete. Yea they were fast!! They are just 2 hacker friendly. With bitorent you don't run near the risk of virus and nastys. Simply put if someone trys to put a program with a virus in it word spreads pretty fast and the file is not shared.

I can only suggest when you make the jump to bittorent read and learn and ask. While files may take longer to get the more people that share the more files you can find. When getting a large file. Just start it. Go to bed then when you wake up the file is done. They are not the type of files you will get in a matter of minutes. It will take time.

In closeing I make a point. I have seen and read that a movie that has not been yet released in the u.s. is already on bittorrent and being shared by TONS of people. That happens all time. Or so I have seen and read.;)

If you use BearShare, enable the statistics view and look at the bottom right corner.
12% is not "most" by any stretch of the imagination. :p

From what I've seen BitTorrent is best for large, popular files, such as DVDs, large applications, many CDs bundled together. Unfortunately seeders have a tendency to disappear very quickly on all but the most popular files. The quality of shared files is generally higher, for now, because of that specialization and of course because files must be advertised on websites and the sort. If a torrent is corrupt or ha a virus, you can remove the link to the torrent and people won't be able to find it.

On the other hand, Gnutella is best for compulsive collectors and people looking off the beaten path for relatively small files. It's also more of a community feel, the files are in a big pile in the middle so to speak, and people are free to come and take what they can find.

I have sometimes wondered if the leech percentage has much real value.

There are probably innumerable people sharing only a handful of 'useless' files nobody will want. And you may have to figure the hostiles sharing junk into the mix as well...not all sharing is good!

It's not as bad as you imagine. Since there's no forced sharing ratios like in BT
or emule there's no incentive to share junk to compensate.

The usenet stuff is the best by a mile. http://www.newzbin.com/

Astraweb are doing a deal for 90gb at £14/$25 one off payment. http://www.news.astraweb.com/
The servers give the top download speed and the files are the best quality.

P2P is crap compared to usenet.

You're paying for pirated content? :mymymy:

Sounds like a sure fire way to get busted. The RIAA and MPA will certainly go after paying customers that have left their details. :nono:

If what astraweb say is true then there should be no record of what I've downloaded. I'm sure there a plenty of ways to skin a cat but it seems to be a sound system.

Usenet is quite secure, but if you're dealing with anything illegal you better know what you're doing because you CAN be found out if you don't cover your tracks. I've read some interesting discussions there but never posted or uploaded anything. Too much hassle to set it up for good anonymity.

just as no security system is uncrackable the converse is true, no guarentee of anonimity is worth the paper it's written on,
the old adage rings true,

you pays yer money you takes yer chances.

IRC is good too and free if you know the right people. Free if you don't too, but you just end up in longer queues. Anonymity is pretty decent. Just you and the bot you're downloading off know your ip address. The downside is you have prerequisite knowledge, and the culture isn't learner friendly. Still though for some media IRC can't be beat.

Books. Anyone one can rip CD data, but it takes someone dedicated to scan an entire book. Those type of people like to group up and work together. There's pretty much no queues in book rooms either. Even busy ones. Always ones around too to suggest new reading material too.

I discovered bittorent a few weeks ago and I have to agree here, I have found it to be better quality and less problems... I love the new version just downloaded it yesterday... a huge improvement.
