I've been using Bearshare for quite sometime. Just about a week ago, I tried to get it to connect without any success. I've unintalled, reinstalled, turned off and on my firewall (win xp), but nothing seems to work.
The left led is on/red, although it occasionally is green the first second or so of the program opening. And the right led is off/green. I noticed that someone else had a similar problem...any ideas as to what else I can try?

You are surely running way to many things and having alot of junk starting up with your computer, how long does it take your computer to start up?
you also have alot of active x controls running and some of them could be corrupted as well. Also have you run a good Adware/spyware program like http://www.lavasoftusa.com/ <---Adware SE?
Follow this link will help you:

I've suspected that too much was going on because my start up is very slow...and annoying! But, I am limited in knowing how to change my start up program's config. How do I get this under control? Including the ActiveX stuff. I follow instructions really good, so fire away!
Thanks for all your help so far! :)

Is there anything you could recommend that is free? I'm on SSI/SSD, and on a tight budget.

You're welcome, First you don't need anything but for home use a firewall, a virus program, or depends on your liking other things. All others you just don't need unless you like it too. Use the Msconfig in that last link to uncheck everything but your firewall and anti virus to start.
Then clean your cashe files by going the folder (My Computer) and double click on that and >>right click on the C: drive and then click properties, from there you should see (Disk Cleanup) Click that and make sure all check boxes are check and then fire away and click ok.
If you follow the link for the Msconfig you'll learn what you'll need to do and when your reboot. So take your time, You will learn a good thing and never forget it by doing this.
All you'll need to start doing is manually turn a program on when you feel you need to by simply clicking on the short cut on the desktop or click it by going to start> all programs. It simply doesn't have to start up with the computer.
Finally I can the other link, Download that and use that adware/spyware program, it's one the best.
I highly recommend after you done all this, run this free virus scan, It's one of the great free virus scans I use on home pc's for other people which just finds files virus program I had at the time or used didn't see yet.
That link is here:

We can move on from here if you still have a problem :D

A number of issues:
1. You may wish to rationalise your anti-virus products to one, as they tend to trip over themselves if more than one is running at one time. AVG (free) is fine. Uninstall the others and make sure you have the latest updates from AVG and do a full scan.
2. AdAware SE (http://www.lavasoftusa.com/support/download/) and Spybot S&D (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/) (both free) should be used to keep the spyware under control.
3. Your add/remove programs screen should have a lengthy visit and get rid of all the superfluous junk.
4. You will find a file called HijackThis.exe on your desktop (C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Desktop\HijackThis.exe). Run it and post the results here in your reply.
5. Your ISP may have P2P filtering implemented by their upline, and you may have to live with this problem until they remove it - they usually have rolling filtering in place for four to six weeks. Still do the cleanup of your computer in anticipation of this problem you have no control over going away.
6. What is the make and model of your router, and/or modem? Have you configured it for port 6346 access?
7. Have you considered converting your drives to NTFS? It makes for a more robust file system, especially if it crashes, and you gain the ability to have sparse file processing on your temporary downloads folder.
8. Are you with AOL? I'm just asking as your system is riddled with their software. You may wish to re-evaluate whether they are providing any benefit to you.
Let us know how you go.

5. Your ISP may have P2P filtering implemented by their upline, and you may have to live with this problem until they remove it - they usually have rolling filtering in place for four to six weeks. Still do the cleanup of your computer in anticipation of this problem you have no control over going away.
Maybe I should log on with AOL dial-up in the meantime or something. Hate to give up my highspeed for so long...
6. What is the make and model of your router, and/or modem? Have you configured it for port 6346 access?
Speedstream 5100
Yes, it is configured for port 6346
7. Have you considered converting your drives to NTFS? It makes for a more robust file system, especially if it crashes, and you gain the ability to have sparse file processing on your temporary downloads folder.
I'm willing to consider ANYTHING. Is it difficult to do? I've noticed that I've had some troubles getting certain Win98/2000 gaming software, etc., to run. It gives me an error box that says it can't work with MS DOS. Do you know what that means? I also have to external drives that I believe are FAT32.
8. Are you with AOL? I'm just asking as your system is riddled with their software. You may wish to re-evaluate whether they are providing any benefit to you.
Yes, I do still have an account with them, but my DSL provider is SBC. I know I have to get rid of those extrenuous versions.
Let us know how you go.
:hello:
What's going on, on your end, making progress yet?

Hi Beefbowl,
Heh. You're an adventurous guy. I've never even heard of half of the progs you've got on there. Good for you!
About older games, you said:
7. "I'm willing to consider ANYTHING. Is it difficult to do? I've noticed that I've had some troubles getting certain Win98/2000 gaming software, etc., to run. It gives me an error box that says it can't work with MS DOS. Do you know what that means? I also have to external drives that I believe are FAT32."
The really old games run on the classic DOS (=Disk Operating System). Those are the white scripts on a black background. As Windows progressed, MicroSoft changed classic DOS to its own MSDOS, and then (with XP) it changed again to something even more Microsoft, and the feature is now called COM on XP. Classic DOS is now history.
What works with some MSDOS games on XP is to right-click on the xxxx.exe executable file (like Monopoly.exe), select "Properties", then choose the "Compatibility" Tab. In "Compatibility Mode" put a check-mark in the box beside "Run this program in compatibility mode for" and select from the drop-down menu something like Windows98 or Windows95, check the specs on the game box/disk and don't select further back than you need. (Unless it still doesn't work, if so, try the next earlier Windows version as the compatibility mode).
Even this wont work for the really old games of the early '90s (classic DOS) but it should put you in some kind of shape for the MSDOS games (Win95 and up).
Hope this helps. Good luck.
:)

4: Accoona Search Assistant, GoGoData Toolbar, DogpileToolbar - do you need this stuff running? It seems that the tools you currently have may not be protecting you too well. I suggest that removing Spyware Doctor and AOL Spyware Protection Service and install AdAware SE and Spybot S&D.
7: A FAT32 to NTFS conversion utility is included with Windows - search in the Help and Support section for details. I strongly suggest a full, verified backup prior to converting in case something should go wrong. You can convert on a drive by drive basis, and can keep the external drives as FAT32.
When you have done a bit of a cleanup and installed AdAware SE, Spybot S&D and done a full scan and cleanup with these and AVG, post a fresh HijackThis log to confirm that all is well.
SBC vs AOL - I'm not buying into that one...

Well, I did take all that crap off of the start-up list, and that has added a great deal of speed. Ad-Aware SE seems to get stuck when it hits a couple of invisible folders on one of my external drives. The folders are called Found.000, Found.001, Found.002, all filled with a crapload of .CHK files. No clue what they are or where they came from.
I've downloaded HijackThis, but am still trying to get a full scan from Ad-Aware. And, still can't connect to Bearshare.
BTW, you guys are awesome!!! I really appreciate all the attention you've given these issues.
Hi Beefbowl,
Heh. You're an adventurous guy. I've never even heard of half of the progs you've got on there. Good for you!
 Guy? I'm a gurl. ;) And yes, I do like to surf and find esoteric stuff. I still only feel like I've perused only a thimble-full of the internet.
I'm gonna give this a try. I seem to remember doing that on another program about a gazillion years ago. Thanks for the idea!!!
I really appreciate all the help from y'all!

A lot of these things have just been lost in the shuffle of junk I've downloaded. GoGoData seems fairly reliable, but Dogpile and the search assistant is Bantha fodder. They're outta here!
7: A FAT32 to NTFS conversion utility is included with Windows - search in the Help and Support section for details. I strongly suggest a full, verified backup prior to converting in case something should go wrong. You can convert on a drive by drive basis, and can keep the external drives as FAT32.
Ugg. Backup...my worst nightmare. I've probably lost 3/4 of my passwords for software. I can't imagine what a mess that would create. Is there a way to protect that information, or do I have to reinstall everything?
When you have done a bit of a cleanup and installed AdAware SE, Spybot S&D and done a full scan and cleanup with these and AVG, post a fresh HijackThis log to confirm that all is well.
Will do! And thanks bunches!!!
SBC vs AOL - I'm not buying into that one...
I know, AOL sucks, I've just been with them for so long, losing my email addy would be a pain in the u know what. SBC however, as been really good for me here. Broadband from Comcast was a complete disaster. Their phone service was shite, too!

Those invisible folders are the remnants of data recovery of damaged files, generated by CHKDSK/SCANDISK, possibly as a result of system crashes or disconnection of external drives prior to using the 'eject' option in Windows (you should always do this to make sure all files have been finalised and written to and everything shut down normally before pulling the plug). Have a browse through the files, and if you cannot recognise anything while opening them in something like notepad, delete them - they are just wasting space. Hint: conversion to NTFS for these volumes may result in less data loss as NTFS has better data protection algorithms.
FAT32 to NTFS conversion can be done on the fly, without backup, preserving all your current software and data settings, but if something should interrupt it, I would hate to have to fix the sorry mess. :mymymy: You should be doing backups - no excuses. :nono: How often depends on how much can you afford to lose and how long to get things back to where they were if your hard drive should become cooked or get wiped by a new virus. I have seen grown men (and women) cry because their only copy has got eaten by some bug or accidentally deleted, and they will pay good money to get it back (it makes for a well paying sideline to do this kind of recovery work).
If you don't already have one, invest in a DVD dual layer burner to do the backups - the price is well under $100 and the cost of dual layer (8.5Gb in one gulp) media is plummeting daily. It can directly replace any existing CD or DVD drive in your system and can be replaced by anybody handy with a screwdriver - it has four mounting screws and as long as you match the jumper setting (master or slave) on the new drive to be the same as the old, the swap should only take a few minutes. If you are pressed for time or money you don't have to back up the whole drive - just the bits that you cannot afford to lose.
I suspect the BearShare connect problem is related to your ISP, and their upline Internet connection - their support desk may not be able to field your questions on this matter as they may not know themselves. Try AOL dialup and see if BearShare then connects - if so this would tend to confirm that the issue is external and outside your control and you will have to wait until the rolling P2P bans are lifted in your area in a few weeks. Let us know how it goes.
AdAware can take a while to go through all the files and folders - be patient - it may be battling a nasty that is out to get it. Make sure you have the latest signature pattern updates before you unleash it.
Adventurous: Sure; be adventurous, just don't take un-necessary risks. You wouldn't sleep with any man you met in a sleazy bar, would you? Why download and install everything that is offered for free? The anti-nasty tools mentioned before should provide some protection, but be careful out there - it is a big world and not everybody has your best interests at heart.
Us guys - geez - you making assumptions too? Glad to be of help. :hello: Keep us posted on how you go.

I know. I suck. :paranoid:

I lost an entire writing project once. That was life altering. I now save to CDs...but my CD hardware has run its course...so investing in the DVD burner.

Must be something like that, because even the latest version of Limewire won't open.

Yes, I've done my best to be careful, but I have no problem sleeping with every man I meet in a sleazy bar! LOL!!! Isn't it a shame that there are geeks out there who choose to make the internet sucky sometimes?

Connection issue if it helps any, I had the same problem and it was my router, nothing worked until all the power went out and came back on when I realized my setting didn't change by just changing it. Maybe a firmware bug and my command didn't take until the router was reset.
Everything seems fine now. :) Hope this helps, sorry if it doesn't.
