[Resolved] Slow internet connection with BearShare {Removed My Global Search Bar}

Gents/Ladies - As recommended in multiple posts, I finally downloaded BearShare 5.1.0 beta 25 with BearStart. Unfortunately, my internet continues to disconnect whenever this (or any) BearShare is launched. Internet Explorer 7.0 will not respond until BearShare is closed. I've used BS for years (and with IE v7 for at least 3 months), but this issue occurred for the *first* time on April 22, 2007. After scanning the boards, I'd hoped switching to the earlier beta with BearStart would eradicate the problem, but it did not.

The initial problem first occurred on a later BearShare version 5.

FYI, Limewire 4.12 works fine.

Re: Problem: BearShare 5.1 beta with BearStart

Are you heavily downloading/uploading anything in BearShare?

What kind of internet do you have?

Take a look here to set upload/download limits as well as connection limits.

Re: Problem: BearShare 5.1 beta with BearStart

A few tests showed my download speed at 600 kbps, and my upload speed at 144 kbps. As suggested, I entered these in the BearShare "Connection" tab as the assymetric bandwith capacities. In the Advanced Limits area, I set Uploads to 110 kbps and Downloads to 400 kbps (both 85% of capacity). Unfortunately, the BearShare launch still knocked out my DSL internet connection.

This is rather troubling since I've used versions 4 and 5 without incident for years. In any case, I've attached my BearDiag report as a .txt file.

Check your McAfee firewall settings are not blocking BearShare.

Check your disk for errors. Do this after a full power down and restart.

Re-install BearShare as some of the files are not accessible.

Wait for your Windows Update downloads to complete.

Disable your MyWay search bar in Internet Explorer.

Check your DNS server configuration actually needs interstate servers configured in your TCP/IP setup. Your ISP support helpdesk should be able to clarify this.

Advise on progress.

Re: Problem: BearShare 5.1 beta with BearStart

(1) <<Check your McAfee firewall settings are not blocking BearShare.>>
McAfee Firewall grants BearShare full permission. Windows Firewall is deactivated.

(2) <<Check your disk for errors. Do this after a full power down and restart.>>
Ran "chkdsk C: /f" and "chkdsk c: /r"

(3) <<Re-install BearShare as some of the files are not accessible.>>
Done.

(4) <<Wait for your Windows Update downloads to complete.>>
All critical updates have been installed.

(5) <<Disable your MyWay search bar in Internet Explorer.>>
Deleted all instances of MyWay and My Global Search Bar via HijackThis and RegEdit. Oddly enough, My Global Search Bar still appears in the Add/Remove Programs list. When I select Remove, an error message appears claiming "the specified module cannot be found." Is there any way to completely eradicate this pest?

(6) <<Check your DNS server configuration actually needs interstate servers configured in your TCP/IP setup. Your ISP support helpdesk should be able to clarify this.>>
In my Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) properties, I forced a manual DNS server address, then rebooted my PC to ensure that my IP address was not static.
McAfee Virus Scan and Lavasoft A- Aware did not find any viruses, trojans, or malicious spyware. I deactivated system restore prior to running these tests, then rebooted.

Verdict: BearShare 5.1.0 b25 works with BearStart, and no longer knocks out my internet. Aside from the minor issue in point #5 above, everything is great.

Much appreciated!

Use C:\Program Files\BearDiagnostic\HijackThis.exe to remove it from the add/remove panel - you will find it buried in the Misc Tools section as Open Uninstall Manager. Use the Delete This Entry button to remove.

Post a fresh BearDiag listing to confirm all is well.

Unfortunately, I cannot locate the Open Uninstall Manager key from the below HijackThis log. "My Global Search Bar" continues to plague the Add/Remove Programs list.

Re: Problem: BearShare 5.1 beta with BearStart

Their directions don't include what file or folder names they use. If you still can't find it, you 'could' load it again and follow their 'standard' removal procedure. That 'should' remove the remaining 'junk' (don't forget the reboot )

How do I "uninstall" the My Global Search Bar?
You can easily uninstall the My Global Search Bar using the instructions below:
Close all open Web browsers
From the "Start" menu in Windows, select "Control Panel", and then select "Add/Remove Programs"
Select "My Global Search Bar"
Click "Change/Remove"

The My Global Search bar will be uninstalled. However, if you reopen your Web browser, and still see the My Global Search Bar, you may need to restart your computer for the uninstall process to be completed.

Everything works great. I deleted all instances of "My Global Search" via RegEdit. And, of more importance, BearShare no longer knocks out my internet connection. I've since added the latest hostiles list to Program Files/BearShare/db. Thanks to all.
