Arrow The TechNutopia Fullsize Hostiles List for BearShare and LimeWire

This is an expanded list for protection against malware, spammers and other abusers of gnutella.
It is compiled from many sources, including the lists from BlueTack Internet Security Systems
and my own scans of the network for defective nodes, over a dozen types of trojan, the top ten
worms and about a dozen classes of spam. It was started in 2004 for BearShare, then LimeWire
started using it in 2006 and FrostWire acquired the capability soon afterwards. It has grown to
fit the task over the past 5 years and has become effective against all kinds of hazards while
enhancing performance (despite it's size) due to steadily improving intelligence on every kind
of threat on gnutella. It now averages 400,000 rules, effectively blocking everything but us.

Needless to say, this makes for a large list. It tend to cut the noise level down so you can get
some searching done without having to wade through mountains of trash. Now it's just hills.

Place "hostiles.txt" into the data folder:
  • BearShare: C:\Program Files\BearShare\db
  • Pro: C:\Program Files\BearShare Pro\db
  • Betas: C:\Program Files\BearShare Test\db
(The smaller copy already there will not be lost, as it is already built in to BearShare.)

LimeWire and FrostWire users:
Place "hostiles.txt" into the settings folder:
  • Windows: C:\Documents and Settings\YOUR_NAME\Application Data\[LimeWire or FrostWire]
or C:\Documents and Settings\YOUR_NAME\[.limewire or .frostWire]
  • Vista: C:\Users\YOUR_NAME\AppData\Roaming\[LimeWire or FrostWire]
(You may have to change a setting in Explorer to be able to see this folder.
In the Tools menu, it's Folder Options and in the View tab turn on "Show hidden files and folders".)

  • Mac OSX: Macintosh HD\Users:YOUR_NAME\Library\Preferences\[LimeWire or FrostWire]

  • linux: /home/YOUR_NAME/[.limewire or .frostWire]

PLEASE REMEMBER TO DELETE THE PREVIOUS LISTS!
They go stale and should be replaced often.

Re: The BearShare Fullsize Hostiles List

Hint: Running BearDiag.exe will search out and update your anti-hostiles list to the most current version available from Aaron's website.

Here you go, folks. Another update to the Hostiles List, only now we'll call it
the TechNutopia Fullsize Hostiles List from now on because it covers LimeWire
too, as of version 4.13, and you can only get it from us. ;]

I am upgrading the process of generating this list to accept incremental
updates to the master copy by any one of the 21 searches I run, as well as
over a dozen other sources. Up to now I did the whole thing manually, with a
text editor and Bluetack's incredible Blocklist Manager toolkit. This intensive
approach, while precise, is quite slow and limited me to producing whole new
lists once every few weeks at best. These lists were ideal protection from
stable nodes which don't change address often but tend to lag behind
fast-movers like those worms which hop from host to host constantly.

I will continue to post a fresh copy as an attachment to the top post in this
thread but only roughly once a month at best. The more frequently updated
file will be the one on my personal webspace. You can click on the web link
for it, or just download and run BearDiag to update it automatically.

Moved all the discussion/troubleshooting posts here. Hopefully this should minimize the clutter and keep people from being pestered with notifications when all they want to see is list updates.

First and foremost, glad to see such a comprehensive filter list around, makes things a little safer for the rest of us.
Sorry, misread the posts...
