Unsharing files & reducing BearShare memory requirements
I have a huge number of shared files and believe this may be causing Bearshare to constantly crash. How do I "unshare" files? I can't figure it out from the library page.

Re: Unsharing files
Hi there mate
the simplest method is to go to the library pane click the "all files"
select the files you wish to unshare right click and remove the tick from the "Shared" option this will unshare them.
if you wish to diagnose a reoccurring problem mikght i suggest you download Beardiag and post the results so our resident techheads can look at it for you.
in the meantime you might unshare everything and just add the files back at say 20 at a time untill it breaks.

Re: Unsharing files
Not only are the files that are shared monitored by BearShare library routines, but so are all the files showing in the database. As the database is in memory, unsharing the files still keeps them in the database. You need to remove all the folders you don't want monitored by deselecting them in the Folders view - see the official help file at http://www.bearshare.com/help/library.htm#1.
Too many files causes a large database to hog memory which makes your system unstable.

Re: Unsharing files
Thanks! Although in the Folders View pane I did not see anywhere that I could click on "all files."

Re: Unsharing files
OK. I went to the Library view and and clicked on "folders" on the left pane. I followed the instructions from the Bearshare link. The "folders" opened a box showing my computer folders. To remove folders, Bearshare link simply said to uncheck those you want removed. Strange thing though, although several folders and sub-folders had a red border, nothing at all was checked. I did hit deselect all but Bearshare still crashed. Did I do it right? To remove the folders?

Re: Unsharing files
Easiest way:
Select any file in your library. highlight it, right click it once, and you should get an option that says " shared".
Click that, and it becomes unshared.
*Wallah*
Thats how I do it.
It's a little more time consuming but then again so am I.

To remove a folder from the library find it in the tree on the left side, right-click on it
and select "Remove". This won't delete it from the disk, just remove it from the library.
Don't forget to clean out your downloads folder too. Move the files somewhere else.

Re: Unsharing files
OK, I'll quote it for the benefit of those that cannot access the official help file here: http://www.bearshare.com/help/library.htm#1
Quote:
Folders View > Toolbar > FOLDERS BUTTON
By default only the folders you chose to share during setup are displayed. You can add more by clicking the Folders button found on the Folders View Toolbar. It will open a folder list (see screenshot below) with easy-to-follow instructions for choosing which folders you want to make accessible for the public.
If you want to completely remove a folder from the Library, you can do that from here also. Note that this is different from unsharing a folder, where the folder remains in the Library but not shared. Unchecking a folder in this folder list will completely remove the folder from the Library (Don't worry, it will not delete the folder from your hard drive).

If you unshare files but they still remain in the BearShare library, they still consume memory as they are still kept in the library database which is memory resident. As Aaron said, move them out of the folders that are monitored by the BearShare library processes. This way they will not consume valuable resources.

Re: Unsharing files & reducing BearShare memory requirements
BearDiag won't unshare your files or reduce the memory footprint the library subroutines consume. This is something you need to do yourself.
You need to remove them from the list to be tracked, not just stop them being shared.

Go into your library, on the left side of the screen is a list of folders.
There will be a folder titled , My Folders. Right click on that folder, and a list will appear...Explore, Shared, Remove, etc.... Click on shared, and it will become...unshared!
